Hi, I’m Kristen Westcott, a busy working mom just like you! It’s my goal to help you permanently simplify your life so you can balance your family and life without trading your sanity for stress and overwhelm

I started my website in September 2017 as a way to help busy moms like me prioritize their physical and mental health so they can keep their head above water as they navigate the challenges of motherhood.

I am truly passionate about creating a thriving life at home and at work, and helping other moms do the same! I use the blog to begin creating conversations and connections with other moms to help them realize that they can have a joyful life, free from overwhelm and guilt.  While Supermom is a fictitious character we all aspire to be like, I love helping women understand that … you can’t have it all, but you CAN HAVE EVERYTHING that is IMPORTANT.

Let me tell you a little bit about me …

In 2016 after having my second daughter, I began my journey to understand how I was going to manage this new chapter of my life!

When I met my husband one of the first things I told him was I was not having children until I hit a couple of milestones in my life. These milestones were set by me and completely arbitrary.  I wanted to have completed my Master’s degree, visited Hawaii and turned 30.  These were non-negotiable!  I figured that if I worked hard enough in my 20s I would have an established career and be ready to just add-on a family. 

Sounds simple, right? 

Probably sounds familiar too.

I hit all my milestones (on time) and in 2014 we welcomed our first daughter into the world (a highly sensitive, colicky bundle of joy whom I love dearly)!  Shortly after I returned to work, I made a career change (new job, new institution, essentially starting over). Here I was trying to navigate building a career in a new field while being a mom to a baby. To say it was stressful and exhausting would be putting it mildly!

I felt like I was failing at work and failing at home! I never seemed to have enough time in the day to get it all done.  In the midst of this adjustment, I got pregnant with our second child.  Life with two little ones was (and is still) crazy!

Fast forward another year and I was back at work trying to balance two kids and building a career.  Despite my preparation this time, it still wasn’t working! I was stressed and overwhelmed, and literally falling apart on a regular basis.

I thought it was me. If I could just work harder, or be more productive, or find the secret then I could get it all together.  I kept telling myself we just have to get through this week, this month, this season, etc.  Sound familiar? 

I was forever snapping at my daughter “Just a minute” or “I’m busy right now, I’ll be right there!” We lived in chaos.   Our routine sounded something like this, get up, get dressed, rush out the door (eating cheerios in the car), rush to work, pick her up from daycare, rush home to make dinner, deal with the dinner chaos with kids, rush to an activity, bath time, bedtime, clean up the kitchen, laundry, make lunches for tomorrow… and so on!  It was one big rush!!!

I kept reading little inspirational messages that said slow down and appreciate more of what you have.  But I had no idea how to do that!

How I Went From Barely Surviving to Thriving

One night after a particularly long week (crazy week at work, missed lunches, sick kids – you know the usual) I had a bit of a meltdown.  After lashing out at my husband and children, I fell into bed sobbing uncontrollably (partly my own little pity party, but largely out of guilt).  I was so overwhelmed with life! Something had to change!!!

If I could just figure out the secret formula for how to get my life together then everything would be ok. 

I tried many things.  It often felt like I would take one-step forward and two steps back.  I searched blogs and social media and read personal development books, yet nothing seemed to work for me long-term.

Until … I stopped looking for a new time management trick or a way to make it all work – a way to have it all.  Instead I began to look at how to enjoy a balanced life.  I began working on my mindset and accepted that while I can have it all, I can’t have it all at once.  Or how I prefer to think of it – I can have everything that is important right now. From there I began to work on learning to let go and figuring out what to let go of.

One of the biggest shifts I had to make was recognizing what season of my life I was in and being ok with it.  I had a habit of trying to make my existing life fit my ideal image of what I thought my life should look like.  Part of this involved letting go of what other people think and really finding my authentic self; embracing who I really was.

I also had to really spend some time working on my perfectionism.  I thought that if I did everything perfectly I could avoid feeling guilty or not good enough.  But what I had to realize was that perfection is an unattainable goal.  I still work on this daily.  Acknowledging my vulnerabilities and practicing self-compassion has helped me shift away from the feeling that “I’m not good enough”.

Through practicing mindfulness and meditation, I have slowly begun to trust my intuition more and have found more gratitude and joy in my life. I have found my version of balance (which will look quite different from yours as we are all unique individuals).

The Secret

Reducing your stress and overwhelm is key to finding your own version of life balance.  I’ll let you in on a little secret … balance is not just something you achieve once and then leave it alone.  Just like riding a bicycle or standing on a bosu ball, you have to continually maintain your balance in life.  You have to live intentionally and frequently re-evaluate your priorities and re-negotiate your boundaries as your life changes.

While I still work very hard every day to maintain a stress-less life and keep this balance (some days it’s easier than others), I now know what I need to do to live an authentic, joyful life.  I can find happiness in the little things.  I no longer wait for life to get better.  I choose to make the most of my life experiences and focus on the moments that matter.

  • I am the oldest daughter of a single mom
  • My favourite colour is blue; aqua to be more specific – I love all things aqua!
  • I used to play field hockey in high-school
  • I met my husband at a pool (where we were both lifeguards)
  • I am a personal growth junkie (never used to be this way, but now I can’t get enough!)
  • I could probably give up just about any food or drink in the world … as long as it’s not chocolate!
  • I LOVE exclamation marks! I used them a lot! [and I talk with my hands if you ever watch my Facebook lives].
  • I’ve recently discovered the Law of Attraction and am now obsessed with practicing this daily.
  • I love to read forensic/medical fiction novels; yet, I have never watched Grey’s Anatomy (shocking I know!)
  • I can probably recite the Disney movies Frozen and Moana word-for-word!
