8 SECRETS TO INSTANTLY FIND MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY
Being a busy working mom can be a constant battle against the clock. Trust me I can relate to the feeling of not having enough hours in the day, and yet still having to find the time to meet work deadlines, do the laundry, keep the house tidy and be there to pick the kids up from school. Ugh so many things!
We find ourselves wondering; surely only a superhero is able to balance a career AND a family?! As for spare time for us mamas, well that’s about as elusive as being able to sleep through the night with a newborn!
Luckily, there is a light at the end of the tunnel (truly there is – I wouldn’t lie to you). It really is possible for us to manage our time more efficiently and make our days more productive. Even during our craziest, most chaotic days we still have the opportunity to create small pockets of time that we can use for ourselves, or however else you’d like!
I know you’re probably reading this and thinking about your day ahead – thinking HOW on earth am I supposed to make free time when I’m already trying to juggle a zillion things?!
I’m going to share some of my best time-saving hacks and advice to help you get back some of the minutes in your day. You may even feel like you have earned an extra 2 hours each day – like you’re living 26/7 instead of 24/7!
Stop the scroll
Ever find yourself aimlessly scrolling through social media? Now is the time to stop! Just stop the madness!!! We’ve all been sucked in; “oh I’ll just quickly see what’s happening on Instagram before I start dinner”, and before we know it we’ve wasted ten, fifteen or even twenty minutes and ended up on the profile of our neighbour’s, best friend’s puppy.
While it may only seem like ten minutes, and the puppy may be REALLY cute, but guess what? All of those minutes throughout the day add up! Say you check your social media three times a day for ten minutes at a time, that’s 30 minutes you’ve spent gazing at other people’s lives rather than focusing on and improving your own (or managing your mega to-do list)!
Learn to say No
Here’s the big one that as moms we struggle with, because at our very core we’re people pleasers. But here’s the reality — we don’t have to say yes to everything, in fact it is totally okay to say no.
It’s healthy to set boundaries, and it can even set a good example for your kids to see that. You don’t have to attend every friend get together, stay late at work, or take on other people’s jobs (whether that’s at work or at home). Learn to say no to the things that aren’t a priority and your schedule will thank you for it!
Stop trying to multitask
While it might be a running joke with our husband that we can multi-task and they can’t, it’s not actually productive to do so. When we try to multi-task we’re not putting all of our focus on one task, we easily get distracted and can end up making mistakes as well as actually taking longer to do each task. Focus your energy and time on one task at a time and notice the difference!
Catch enough ZZZ’s
Believe it or not, but getting enough sleep is one of the most important things you can do to have a more productive day. If your body isn’t getting enough rest you’ll be tired, irritable and not functioning to your full amazing potential.
Schedule sleep and set yourself a realistic bed time. Getting into the habit of reading before bed (rather than more screen time!), Journaling is also a really great way to wind down before you drift off, it also means time to yourself – win-win!
Set realistic daily goals
Let’s be honest here, how often do you write a to-do list and not even half of it gets completed? Time and again busy moms make the mistake of trying to do much and not prioritizing. We only have so many hours in the day and we need to stop trying to overachieve what’s really possible.
Cut your tasks down to the absolute priorities and make sure your daily goals are achievable – it’s better to have free time and be able to do more than having a daunting never-ending to do list that never gets done!
Let your hair down and be YOU!
When was the last time you went to a yoga class, or even had a candle lit bath? As moms we put everything else before caring for ourselves, but when you’re stressed and overworked it actually hinders your productivity, you need to take some time to relax and do what you love in order to be the best version of you.
Practice mindfulness so you can increase productivity
Mindfulness isn’t just about wellness retreats in exotic locations. Simple, quick mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation and journaling can help boost your focus, and relieve your stress, which ultimately increases your productivity. Yep, you read that right – practices that involve slowing down can actually boost your productivity and speed up the completion of your to-do list!
Creating some free time in your day doesn’t have to unachievable. Try implementing some or all of these techniques and believe me; you’ll be on your way to a much clearer schedule. Just make sure you use some of that clear space to treat yourself!
