7 Effortless Tips For Dealing With Overwhelm That Are Ridiculously Easy To Implement

At times feeling overwhelmed can feel like it goes hand in hand with being a mom.

There’s often a million thoughts darting through our minds, and you have no idea of how to break free from the chaos. It can feel as though we are drowning in our own cluttered heads (who’s with me on this?).Your to-do list is never-ending, and you have no clue how to even get started with it! Everything on it seems important so how do you get it all done? With your mind at the breaking point, you just don’t know how to cope with it all.

Don’t worry, we all have bad days where we don’t know whether we are coming or going, it’s all part and parcel of being a busy mom (it really is, and I feel you and am sending you a virtual hug). But there are some techniques you can use to help ease the overwhelm and unload some stress. I’m going to share these with you in this post.

Breathe

If you’re thinking “but I’m already breathing”, hear me out. Just taking a moment to take a few deep breaths can really help our body and mind calm down. Stress can cause our hormones to go haywire and limits our ability to think clearly.

By taking these deep breaths it will start to relieve this stress enabling us to think much clearer.

Make a list

Another simple, yet satisfying one. After your deep breaths take out some pen and paper and make a list of the things that are causing you to be overwhelmed.

The brain doesn’t have the capacity to store all of your thoughts, and everything you need to do with your day and this is when the overwhelm starts to take over. By getting it all out and having it written down in front of you, you release this pressure from the brain and you’ll have more capacity to start to focus on the tasks at hand.

Once you start to look at your list you’ll start to notice what the priorities are, what needs to be completed urgently and what can wait. You’ll feel like your regaining some control over your life and that will start to kick the overwhelm back to the curb.

Eliminate

Once you’ve written your list you’ll probably start to notice that there are things on there, that now they are written down just do not seem important. Now that it’s not just another thought in your head you can see that it’s actually not a valuable use of your time – it just doesn’t compare to the other more pressing matters on your list.

This is where you need to learn to let go of those things in order to make your list shorter.

Prioritize

If I had a dollar for every time I mentioned prioritizing, I’d be a millionaire. Take another look at your list and work out your priorities, these are the things that you should be focusing on – the rest can wait.

Sometimes our priorities need us to take smaller steps towards achieving them, and that is okay. In this case, work out which steps you need to take to get there and achieve your long term goal.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the size of the task in front of you, break it down into small manageable steps so that you have a plan of how to complete it… Now I bet it looks far less scary!

Schedule your time

Often our overwhelm is caused by the fact we have a ton of things to be doing and we’re not sure how to fit it all in … and it just becomes too much!

A great way to overcome this is to start planning when you’re going to fit these tasks in. Once again you are taking back control of the chaos.

Think about realistically what you can get done in the next day, week, month and even year, and then start to slot everything in. This will help you to feel less stressed about everything that is going on because you’ll have allocated time to each task enabling you to keep all of your focus on one task at a time.

Re-evaluate how you think

Quite often people can talk themselves into being overwhelmed. I’m not saying your life isn’t crazy and hectic, believe me I trust that it is! But we do have a tendency to talk ourselves into an even worse sense of overwhelming.

By saying things like “I don’t have enough time” we create more stress and pressure in our minds. Instead of thinking like this, try thinking in a more positive way, for example “that task is not a priority right now”. You’ll notice a shift in how you feel and your attitude towards things.

Make time for you

I know it may seem impossible to find the time to do something you love, but it is a crucial part of relieving stress and keeping a happy and healthy mind. Even if it is just 30 minutes make sure you are finding the time to do something that makes you happy whether it’s just getting out for a walk, writing down your thoughts or doing some relaxing yoga. You will reap the rewards and feel so much more zen!
