5 Simple Tricks to Master Work-Life Balance as a Busy Mom

When you have a schedule that’s already fit to burst, and you feel like you’re being torn in every direction it can be hard to find that perfect balance between work and home life. First of all, I’ll be honest, perfection doesn’t always exist, not when you have a family and a job.

So, the first step you can take towards a more peaceful lifestyle is to let go of the idea of perfection on an everyday basis. Not easy, I know (I am a perfectionist continuously working to accept good enough).

I’m a mom with a busy career that I love, but to put it lightly I am a busy bee! Years of experience and some clever planning along the way has enabled me to master my work/life balance and squeeze in some time amongst the million other things that always needs to be done.

So how do you achieve this mythical work/life balance that seems like only something possible in a dream world right now? Follow my tips to be a guru of work, home and family life.

Plan your week instead of just your day

When we try to make a schedule for the day ahead it can seem really daunting, because we try to cram in so many tasks at once and we end up just trying to fit too much into too short a time period. If we look at the whole week ahead of us it can look a lot less scary!

By using a weekly schedule, we’re able to spread the tasks out and work out what can be done on certain days instead of trying to fit everything into one day. This can even enable us to schedule in some free time for ourselves (I know, who would’ve thought?!), as well as the foresight of work and family commitments –  creating a much more balanced week ahead!  (Are you cheering yet?)

Learn your priorities and make sure they get done

When you’re working out your weekly schedule it’s important to recognize the things that absolutely MUST get done, in other words; your priorities. Now, make sure you schedule these things in FIRST and give them ample time.

More often than not people tend to put the little tasks first like doing the dishes, the laundry or nipping to the shops for that pint of milk, they do this because they think if they get those tasks out of the way first there will be more time for the bigger priority. Wrong. By planning in the big and important tasks first, we then leave gaps of time that the smaller less necessary tasks can be done in.

Set working hours

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes it’s hard to switch our brains off from work mode. How often does it get to 5 pm and you think “just 30 more minutes to finish this report!”

By setting working hours and sticking to them it makes it so much easier to plan your life around work – that includes finding the time to spend with your kids, attend that soccer match or ballet class, have time to yourself to read a book or cook a nice meal for your family. In order to have a balanced lifestyle, you need to enforce time limits so that tasks don’t keep expanding and taking away from other aspects of your life.

Prioritize your health and wellbeing

As a mom myself I understand that family are first and foremost the top priority, and work usually comes after that. But, I personally believe that prioritizing your health and wellness is also so important. We’re all aware that burnout is very real, us moms can feel on the edge of it more often than not!

For me, burnout usually happens when I let a hectic schedule get in the way of making healthy choices. When we’re running around here, there and everywhere all day it’s easy for our health to get pushed to the back burner.

Nowadays I always make sure to make a conscious effort to focus on my health and wellbeing. That can be ten minutes of yoga in the morning, simple meditation practice or getting my daily dose of vitamins in a smoothie. Making the time for these practices will not only help you in your quest for a more balanced lifestyle, but it will also calm your mind.

Cut down your screen time

It’s hard to switch off from the world if you have constant access to social media, emails and everything else the internet has to offer – particularly if your devices are connected to your work. Not only does it not allow you a break, but it’s also getting in the way of your family time.

Set yourself time in the evening when you are going to switch your electronic devices off and then do it! Seriously! You will be free from the distractions of your mobile phone, and more present to spend quality uninterrupted time with your family – and the bonus? Cutting down on screen time is also better for your eye health (ever get that annoying eye twitch?), and can help improve sleep! Halleluiah!
